Municipality of Budapest

Budapest is „Capital of Caves” because it is the only capital on the globe under the residential area of which significant size caves are located. In addition, these caves take a particular place in the row of the world’s caves not only for their location but for their unusual formation as well. During the conference there will be an opportunity to get known the increasedly protected caves of the Buda thermal karst because in addition to the tourist caves we also organize overalled cave tours into the passages of a total length of 45 km spreading under the city.

For these tours it will be possible to apply during the conference at the registration process only.

It is a cave opening in the downtown of Budapest in an elevation of 258 m above sea level, voted increased protected for its size, genetics and minerogenesis in 1982. The cave running in the area of Rózsa-domb (Rose Hill) got its name from the mountain including the system. Its entrance already concreted for cave and life protecting reasons was found during the canalization of the Törökvészi road in 1933. Its currently used artificial entrance opens at the northern side of the Ferenchegyi road, in the arboreous-shrubby area at the Őzgida street turn-out. The cave system of labyrinthine layout was formed in Eocene limestone and marl by the effect of springing hot waters. The narrow, fissure-like passages forming a rhombic network of a total length of 6000 meter and 85 m vertical dimension occupy a 270 x 120 m area only. The walls are decorated by characteristic solution forms, solution channels, solution conchoids, spherical bays, spherical caldrons, spring tubes as well as pisolite, calcite sponge, barytes and lublinite minerals. The closed cave that can be visited by permission only is utilized for children suffering from respiratory tracts disease for disease preventing, sport therapeutic purposes since 1997.

Based on its geological values it is an increased protected natural value since 1985. It opens in the 2nd District of Budapest in the József-hegyi street, 229 m above sea level. The system now known in a length of more than 5600 m was accessed by uncovering a passage found during foundation works of a building in 1984. This is the third longest cave of the Buda Mountains and the sixth longest one of our country. The passages running mainly along East-West oriented fracture lines in Triassic limestone, Upper Eocene nummulitic-discocyclinic limestone as well as marl were dissolved by hot waters springing in the Middle Pleistocene. The ample halls of passages running about 55 m underground are connected by narrower, fissure-like passages. Certain shafts even run down to 105 m depth. The solution forms, spherical bays, spherical caldrons are mainly covered by mineral deposits. The passages are covered by snow-white pisolite, acicular aragonite groups, pyramids formed of calcite plates, gypsum flowers, gypsum daggers, gypsum crystal filaments, calcite, barytes, as well as varying colored and shaped dripstones. The cave is closed, to visit it professional arguments, permission and caving experience are required.

It opens in the 3rd District, from the left off quarry located in the western side of the Mátyás-hegy (Mátyás Hill) in the elevation of 202.5 m above sea level. The direction of the labyrinthic, characteristically spacious passage network formed in Eocene and Triassic limestones for the activity of hot waters springing from the depth were determined by fracture lines. A small pond can be found in its deepest point running down to the local karst water level in a depth of 107.6 m. The walls are decorated with spherical caldrons and locally with calcite (CaCO3), barytes (BaSO4) and gypsum crystals (CaSO4 2H2O). Smaller passages of it were known in the 1920's already, the revealing work running in our age started in 1948. In its upper tunnel the measuring station of the Eötvös Loránd Geophysical Institute is working since more decades. A section of the closed cave is open for adventure tourism, the other passages can be visited with permission only, walking through requires caving experience.

Based on its hidrogeological importance it is an increased protected natural value within the area of the capital since 1982. This is the only active thermal water cave of the Budai Mountains revealed in significant length. Its entrance opens in the 2nd District at the Malom Lake (Frankel Leo str.). Its upper, dry entrance is located above the Malom Lake in an elevation of 116 m above sea level and the lower one can be found beneath the water level of the lake in an elevation of 105 m above sea level. In the dissolution of the fissure-like passages running in Eocene Marl mixing of warm waters and cold karst waters have played role. The walls are decorated with spherical caldrons and hot spring tubes, in a deeper level they are covered with black, manganesian coating. It has got its name about the pharmacist who had walked through its dry passages already in 1856 and analyzed the chemical composition of the water. Discovery of the underwater sections started in 1953 and its length has reached 420 m by 1977. In November 2002, following the opening of an unknown passage, and as a result of exploration dives taking place its length exceeds 6 km, the depth is 98 m. The thermal water of 20–23 °C springing in the cave is utilized by Lukács-bath. For visiting the closed cave and diving a permission is required.

It is a cave system of two individual caves increased protected since 1982, formed by creation of the penetrability in the area of the capital. Pál-völgyi Cave: it opens in the 2nd District, in the left off Pál-völgyi quarry at Szépvölgyi str. 162, at the elevation of 205 m above sea level. The passages in the mass of fissure nature solved by the Middle Pleistocene thermal water running were formed in Upper Eocene aged limestone, subalternately in marl, along fracture lines. Its known length approximates 13.5 km, its vertical dimension is 114 m. The passages running at upper level are mainly narrow, high fissures, passages at the deeper parts are wide, flattish, filled up by clay. Characteristic are the spherical caldrons to its form treasure and calcite (CaCO3), barytes (BaSO4), rarerly pisolites to the minerogenesis. Unlike the caves in Buda, it is rich in dripstones, in addition to stalactites and stalagmites dripstone flags, curved dripstones and pools lined with cave pearls can also be found. Its entrance opened during quarrying works in 1904 and it had been revealed in a length of 1200 m till the year 1910. Its current length is the result of the research performed by the Bekey Imre Gábor Caving Group upsurged in 1980 and continuing even today. Since 1927 a section of it is built and can be visited under electric illumination in street wear. The entire reconstruction of the technical equipment of the visitable part extended up to 500 m in 1989 was completed in 2001. As a result of a more decades long work the explorers originated the passage into the almost 5500 m long Mátyás-hegyi Cave in 2001. The so formed system with its 19,000 m total length is the second longest cave of our country.

It is an increased protected natural value opened for mass tourism, voted as medical cave in 1991. It opens in the 2nd District of Budapest, in the northeastern side of the Ferenc-hill, in elevation of 189 m and 219 m above sea level, respectively. The passages running in Upper Eocene limestone along fissures were dissolved by thermal waters. Its revealed length is 2200 m, the vertical dimension is 50 m. Its characteristic form elements are the spherical bays, spherical caldrons. Minerogenesis: yellowish-white pisolite, calcite plates and acicular aragonite as well as smaller dripstone formations. It opened during quarrying in 1930, the first people walking-through were András Futó and Károly Sebős, than Hubert Kessler. From the underground reception building at Pusztaszeri str. 35 a sloped tunnel leads into the section built with concrete pavements, equipped with electric illumination, opened in 1986, which is also utilized by the Phthisiotherapeutic Institute of the János Hospital for medical treatment of people suffering from respiratory tracts diseases since 1990. In the entrance building an exhibition presenting the increased protected caves of the Buda Mountains as well as the space model of the cave can be seen.
